~Purpose of Studying Mathematics~

A student of mathematics will often wonder the purpose of studying mathematics (sometimes aloud during a lecture, much to the chagrin of his/her instructor).  While this question is quite valid, the real answer is esoteric, and since the student usually prefers a more concrete (and thus sometimes trivial) response the true reason escapes the student’s understanding.  To math teachers the true nature of Mathematics’ purpose is understood and we hold as our goal to pass along this understanding to our students.  The reason is this:

The purpose of the study of mathematics is to be able to take a set of conceptual objects and study their relationships in a logical manner, apply the discoveries and communicate this understanding with clarity and precision. ~ W.E.McGaugh
